Democratizing Science: Raven Baxter’s Mission to Make Science Accessible to All

Exploring Dr. Raven’s Journey in STEM: The Science Maven’s Path to Success | Nebraska Today

On April 3 at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Raven Baxter, also known as the Science Maven to her over 200,000 followers, will be speaking at the Nebraska Union Swanson Auditorium. Baxter is a trained molecular biologist and science educator who has a mission to democratize science, nurture curiosity, and bridge the gap between complex scientific concepts and the general public.

Baxter’s viral hip-hop science videos led her to start the Black in SciComm and Black in STEM Education movements. Now she leads Science Haven, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making science engaging for everyone, regardless of their scientific knowledge or background. This event is free and open to the public.

Joining Baxter for a relaxed conversation will be Jocelyn Bosley, research impact coordinator in the Office of Research and Economic Development. They will discuss Baxter’s STEM journey, the challenges and opportunities in creating a more diverse and inclusive STEM community, and creative strategies for making science appealing and relevant to a broader audience.

The event is sponsored by Nebraska EPSCoR with additional support from several departments including the School of Biological Sciences, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and the Center for Science, Math and Computer Education.
