EU Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decrease by 4.0% in Final Quarter of 2023: Sectoral and Geographical Insights

Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU economy decrease by 4.0% in the fourth quarter of 2023.

In the final three months of 2023, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU economy were estimated at 897 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq), which represents a 4.0% decrease compared to the same quarter in 2022. Despite this reduction in emissions, the EU’s GDP remained stable with a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the same quarter in 2022.

According to Eurostat, which published quarterly estimates for greenhouse gas emissions by economic activity, these numbers complement other quarterly socio-economic data such as GDP and employment. The sectors that saw the most significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions during the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2021 were electricity and gas supply (-17.6%) and manufacturing (-3.5%). Household emissions remained relatively stable during this time frame.

Among the 24 EU countries where greenhouse gas emissions decreased in the fourth quarter of 2023, Estonia (-19.6%), Bulgaria (-18%) and Finland (-9%) recorded some of the largest reductions. Ten out of these twenty-four countries also experienced a decline in GDP while reducing their emissions, while eleven managed to decrease their emissions while growing their economies.

On the other hand, there were five countries that recorded increases in greenhouse gas emissions during this period: Malta (+14.5%), Slovenia (+13%), Cyprus (+5%), Slovakia (+4%) and Greece (+1%) .
