Lehigh Valley Health Network and Jefferson Health Announce Merger, Set to Form One of the Largest Health Systems in the Country

LVHN and Jefferson Health Proceed with Merger in Lehigh Valley Region

A merger between health networks in Pennsylvania is on the horizon, as Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and Jefferson Health have signed a definitive agreement to combine. The deal is expected to be completed later this summer, pending final reviews and execution of closing conditions. The two networks announced their intent to merge in December.

The new health system will be among the 25 largest in the country, with access to 30 hospitals and 700 outpatient sites for patients. LVHN said that the combined network would mean a workforce of 65,000 people, making it one of the top 15 nonprofit health systems in the U.S.

Joseph Cacchione, CEO of Jefferson Health, will continue to serve as CEO of the Jefferson enterprise under the new integrated system. Brian Nester, president and chief executive officer of LVHN, will serve as executive vice president/chief operating officer of the Jefferson enterprise and president of the legacy LVHN, reporting directly to Cacchione. According to Nester’s statement in December, no job cuts are expected due to lack of overlap between existing networks. However, he did mention that down the road there could be some as they look at synergies between their collective facilities.
