New NFL Trade Deadline Set for Tuesday After Week 9: A Look at the Proposed Changes and What It Means for Teams

The NFL trade deadline has been extended until after Week 9.

In a major change, the NFL trade deadline has been moved to the Tuesday after Week 9 starting in the 2024 season, following approval during the NFL’s annual meetings. The initial proposal to move the deadline back two weeks after Week 10 was submitted by Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry and supported by several teams including the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders. However, it was ultimately the Pittsburgh Steelers’ proposal to push it back only one week that received the necessary three-fourths approval to pass.

One of the reasons behind Berry’s proposal was to give teams more flexibility as they head into the second half of the regular season. He argued that this would maintain competitive integrity and provide teams with more time before deciding to sell off their roster. Berry highlighted that while other sports have adjusted their trade deadlines based on changes in their seasons, such as adding an extra week for college football or moving up Thanksgiving Day for NBA games, the NFL trade deadline had not been adjusted when they transitioned to an 18-week regular season.

Over the past decade, teams have been eliminated from postseason contention as early as Week 11, occurring in 2014 and 2016. Berry felt that moving the trade deadline to after Week 10 would allow teams to remain competitive and have additional flexibility in their decision-making process. Since 2012, the NFL trade deadline has been set for the Tuesday after Week 8. This upcoming season, teams will have until 4 p.m. ET on November 5 to finalize any trades before
