New York Yankee Managers Collaborate with YES Network: What Happened to Buck Showalter?

Sources reveal that YES Network engaged in conversations with Buck Showalter regarding potential involvement with Yankees’ regional network

This offseason, the YES Network was interested in hiring not one, but two former New York Yankee managers. Along with bringing on Joe Girardi, Aaron Boone’s predecessor as Yankee manager, the network also had discussions with Buck Showalter about joining.

Showalter was under contract with the Mets, who had the right to prevent him from advancing talks with YES, but would have allowed it if talks had progressed. However, Showalter was fired by the Mets after a disappointing season, and is still being paid not to manage in 2024.

Despite preliminary discussions with YES, Showalter’s contract status ultimately derailed any further advancements in talks. Nonetheless, the Mets stated that they would not prevent him from pursuing a job with YES or any other opportunities. Showalter will be part of MLB Network’s coverage this season and has previous experience as a TV analyst.

The addition of Girardi to YES is a unique circumstance given that he was the previous manager before Boone took over. Girardi was fired after the Yankees’ 2017 season where they made it to ALCS Game 7 and has since been replaced by Boone. With Boone on the hot seat after failing to make the playoffs last year, it remains unclear if Showalter would have accepted a job with YES if offered. However, his role on MLBN will be broader with only once-a-month appearances avoiding any such conflicts.
