Russia’s FSB Chief Alexander Bortnikov Blames Ukraine and West for Moscow Attack, Amid Ongoing Tensions with Ukraine

Lukashenko goes against Putin, claims terrorists escaping to Belarus

Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the FSB, Russia’s security service, has accused Ukrainian and Western secret services of facilitating the attack in Moscow last Friday that resulted in 139 deaths and was claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State. Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack and dismissed Russia’s accusations as lies. However, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko challenged Russia’s narrative by stating that the terrorists initially tried to flee to Belarus, not Ukraine.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, but both Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government continue to point fingers at Ukraine and the West. Putin claims that Ukraine provided a “window” for the attackers to cross the border despite being highly guarded due to its proximity to a war zone. Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, stated that Belarus and Russia coordinated actions to intercept the suspects’ car as it fled towards the border with Ukraine and Belarus.

Bortnikov reiterated his belief in an international conspiracy against Russia, stating that the attack was orchestrated by radical Islamists with help from Western and Ukrainian special services. He also mentioned that suspects planned to travel to Ukraine and be received as heroes. Despite these claims, no evidence has been provided to support these accusations. The FSB head also mentioned that he is yet to determine who ordered this attack.

The comments made by Patrushev and Bortnikov reflect Kremlin’s narrative which aims justifying potential escalations in war in Ukraine. With news of eight suspects now in preventive prison and a possible arrest of a Kyrgyz-born man involved in mass shooting tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate further.

It seems like Russian regime is determined assert its influence over Ukraine potentially leading further conflict
