Russia’s Persistent Aggression: UK Urges Immediate Action in Ukraine and Georgia

Ukraine claims Russia’s troops ‘partially pushed back’ from key town, as Putin’s offensive ‘seems to slow down’ in latest Ukraine war update

In recent days, Ukraine has faced an onslaught from Russia while Georgia has seen riots as Russia sought to assert its influence and pass a controversial “foreign agents” law. Today, the UK’s House of Commons addressed an urgent question on “Russia’s aggression relating to Ukraine and the situation in Georgia”. Jim Shannon, a Democratic Unionist Party politician, tabled the question and Leo Docherty, the armed forces minister, answered on behalf of the government.

Docherty noted that today marked day 811 of Putin’s “special military operation”, which was supposed to last only three days but has failed in all its objectives. The conflict is evolving, and Russia’s latest assault on the Kharkiv region was “almost certainly” a bid to divert Ukrainian resources away from other parts of the front line and threaten Kharkiv – the second-largest city in Ukraine.

The UK will not be diverted from its commitment to support Ukraine in their fight against Russian aggression. The government has already announced a vast package of aid in January and is continuing to support the Ukrainian military. Turning to Georgia, Docherty said that the government is observing events with concern as they introduce a law on foreign influence. The UK is committed to peaceful protest and calls for calm and restraint on all sides.
