Science Saturday Hosts Weather Expert to Discuss Life-Saving Forecasts and Ocean Prediction Services

Meteorology Presentation Scheduled for Science Saturday on March 30th

On March 30, 2024, Michael Folmer, a warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md., will be presenting at Science Saturday via Zoom at 11 a.m. The event is organized by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences and is free for all attendees.

Folmer’s presentation titled “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore” will focus on his work in providing life-saving forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services for various entities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry, and mariners who travel beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. He will also highlight the Jersey Shore Mesonet, which consists of a network of automated weather stations, including one at LBIF, and ongoing efforts to expand this network.

Despite his background in tropical meteorology, Folmer has shifted his focus to satellite and mid-latitude weather in recent years. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as a satellite liaison for various satellite programs at different weather centers. Interested individuals can register for Science Saturday lectures online at lbifoundation.org/science or through LBIF’s subscriber emails.
