Unrest in Moscow: President Putin Claims Attack Carried Out by Radical Islamists Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

Putin shifts blame to “radical Islamists” while also targeting Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the attack at a concert hall near Moscow was carried out by radical Islamists. During a televised meeting, Putin stated that the crime was committed in order to intimidate people in Ukraine, where there has been ongoing conflict since 2014. Several suspects are currently being held in custody for investigation, including three individuals who appeared before a judge and reportedly pleaded guilty. Despite Islamic State claiming responsibility for the attack, Putin and other Russian officials have suggested that Ukraine may have been involved. However, the White House has dismissed these claims as Kremlin propaganda and asserted that ISIS fighters were responsible. There have been reports of torture and injuries sustained by suspects while in custody, prompting condemnation from human rights activists. The public display of brutality is seen as a tactic to distract from failures within the Russian security services before the attack. Three days after the incident, 97 injured individuals were still receiving treatment in hospitals with over 137 dead and over 180 injured. The attack has gripped the nation, with grieving individuals laying flowers at a makeshift memorial at the site of the tragedy. The situation continues to unfold with investigations ongoing and questions surrounding motives and perpetrators of the attack
